BILL CANFIELD FLY FISHING CAMP FOR KIDS
ABOUT OUR CAMP
Note: The Canfield Fly Fishing Camp will not be held in 2020 due to the Covid 19 crisis and the ensuing closure of our host French Woods Sports and Arts Camp.
Bill Canfield was an avid angler and friend of the rivers and streams of the Catskills region. Bill loved seeing kids get into fly fishing and felt very strongly about helping kids fall in love with this sport. When Bill passed away, his family set up a fund to help kids do just that. A few phone calls and meetings later, Friends of the Upper Delaware got on board to help get the project off the ground. Today, the the camp organization partners with FUDR, French Woods Sports & Arts Center, and over a dozen volunteers to host and teach the kids for two one-week sleep-away camp sessions every summer.
Campers between the ages of 12 and 17 will enjoy a seven day stay at the camp and each camper will receive a brand new Orvis fly rod and reel complete with fly line and leader. The rod and reel is the Canfield Camp's gift to each camper. Kids arrive on Sunday and spend that day settling in, meeting other campers, and choosing their French Woods electives. The fun begins on Monday when the fly fishing crew arrives to get the program started.
Fun yet Educational
Through the generosity of French Woods, the camp offers a wonderful opportunity to learn how to fly fish as well as participate in an amazing range of camp activities. The days are organized with fly fishing instruction in the mornings, led by professional Upper Delaware guides Joe Demalderis and Ben Rinker, followed by French Woods' guided activities in the afternoon. The camp offers well appointed accommodations, three square meals a day, and loads of fun, all in one of the country's premier summer camps.
So what will your child actually learn at camp? Scroll down to see the many thing they'll be taking part in.
Our Camp provides an opportunity for your child to learn all about trout and the food they eat. Our instructors will introduce the campers to the fascinating life that lies beneath the surface of our rivers and streams.
Our instructors and volunteers are passionate about conserving our natural resources. Your child will get a good foundation in the reasons why we are so dedicated to preserving our environment and keeping our streams healthy.
FLY FISHING EQUIPMENT BASICS
Our instructors will teach campers the basics of using fly fishing equipment and flies. Instruction includes how to set up the rod and reel to how to tie on flies and of course, how to cast that line!
FLY TYING INSTRUCTION
Part of the experience of fly fishing includes, of course, learning to tie your own flies. Kids will learn how to tie a few select patterns, while building foundation skills that will enable them to tie pretty much anything if they decide to pursue this rewarding hobby.
FISHING FIELD TRIPS!
Campers will get the chance to hone their skills on three different field trips to exclusive Catskills destinations.
Kids will enjoy rock flipping and casting practice on the East Branch of the Delaware where host, Ben Rinker, will guide kids through stream entomology and fun casting practice!
Later in the week, they'll get the rare opportunity to put their skills to work at the famed Beaverkill Fly Fishing Club, along the Upper Beaverkill, and again at Indian Springs Fly Fishing Club, on the Main Stem of the Delaware River.
